Mental health issues, like depression, anxiety and past abuse or neglect, can contribute to chronic pelvic pain (CPP). Addressing these issues through counselling is an important part of effective therapy for many women.

Psychotherapy is a formal relationship with a counsellor. This relationship is designed to help you explore difficult, and often painful, emotions and experiences. The process is intended to help you have more control over difficult parts of your life, including your chronic pain.

Counselling can help you deal with other issues as well, such as:

  • frustration and anger about living with chronic pain
  • the pressures of coping with family, work and pain
  • general stress
  • relationship issues, including sexual problems associated with CPP

What Is Involved?

There is no such thing as a typical counselling session. There are many different philosophies that guide counselling and a number of different forms it can take. You may choose to go for individual counselling, couples counselling, or group therapy, which involves meeting with a group of women with similar experiences. If you desire, counselling can also include other people close to you.

Choosing a Counsellor

There are many kinds of counsellors and therapists, with a wide range of training backgrounds. These include social workers, nurses, mental health counsellors, psychologists and psychiatrists. Look for a counselor or therapist whose approach, style and personality feel right for you.

You may want to meet with two or three possible therapists, to assess whether you would like to work together. During that initial consultation, you can get to know each other and you can ask any questions you may have. For example:

  • What kind of training do you have?
  • What kinds of clients do you work with?
  • Is there a charge for a therapy session? If so, how much?
  • Where do you work? (Some counsellors work in more than one location.)
  • Have you worked with other women who have chronic pelvic pain?
  • What is your cancellation policy?

Before choosing a counsellor or therapist, you want to be sure you feel comfortable with them, that you feel respected and supported by them, and that their skills and way of working suit your personal needs.
