Memory Advantage: Improve Your Memory, Mood, and Confidence Throughout Life
(Book)
Author: Thomas H. Crook, PhD
The Memory Advantage offers techniques for dealing with memory problems.
The book explains the basic neurophysiology of memory, about 'normal' age-related changes in memory and how these differ from early signs of disorders such as Alzheimer disease. It also stresses how important memory is in how one thinks and feels about oneself and others.
Various techniques and strategies to remember constructive information are explored in this book, such as association and visualization. The author also introduces readers to the techniques of cognitive behaviour therapy, arguing that it's important to understand the relationship between the information stored in memory and how people think and feel every day. He provides a technique for purging maladaptive memories and substituting more positive memories accumulated over the course of a lifetime.
The book also stresses the importance of diet, exercise, stress reduction, adequate sleep, smoking cessation, and avoidance of problematic drugs used to treat medical or psychiatric disorders.
Thomas H. Crook serves as president of Psychologix, a worldwide research association. He is the former chairman of both the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health and American Psychological Association Task Forces on the Diagnoses and Treatment of Age-Associated Memory Impairment.
