Eating disorders: a serious health concern for women

While both men and women suffer from eating disorders, over 90 per cent of those with an eating disorder are women. Eating disorders represent a serious mental and physical health concern. 

  • 1.5 per cent of women between the ages of 15 and 24 have an eating disorder
  • the transition between adolescence and adulthood is the period of time with the highest rates of eating disorders
  • the average duration of bulimia nervosa is 8.3 years
  • anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of all psychiatric illnesses – an estimated 10 per cent of individuals with anorexia nervosa will die due to it
