High-Risk Pregnancies
Pregnancies are labeled high-risk if there is a higher than average chance of complications developing. You can be labeled 'high-risk' and yet have a perfectly healthy pregnancy, if for example you:
- have diabetes
- are carrying more than one child (twins or triplets)
On the other hand, you may have entered pregnancy without any risks and have had problems develop; for example, you may have signs of premature labour.
It's scary to hear that your pregnancy is at risk. You may feel that you have lost your dreams of a worry-free pregnancy. Remember that not all high-risk situations are the same. Not all women with high-risk pregnancies develop complications. Talk to your caregiver about the risks that are affecting your pregnancy.
You may be monitored more carefully. Your caregiver may suggest additional tests, specific treatments, extra visits to specialized clinics, daily home monitoring or hospitalization. Your caregiving team will explain to you what model of care is best for you and why.
Try not to feel overwhelmed, and be sure to ask questions. It may be wise to write down your questions, so you will remember what you wanted to ask. Your care provider should be prepared to discuss the purpose of each test or procedure, as well as the benefits and risks. Make sure you understand the recommendations and the decisions that have to be made.
