When to Call the Doctor

Call your doctor for direction, if you have any of the following experiences:

  • heavy, bright red bleeding from the vagina that goes through one pad in an hour or less

  • a temperature over 38ºC (100ºF), or if you are shivering or have the chills

  • the discharge from your vagina smells bad

  • it hurts when you urinate

  • it is difficult to urinate OR you are urinating very frequently

  • you're having trouble breathing

  • you have a lot of pain

  • you've had a cesarean section and your incision is painful, leaking, very red or swollen

  • you need help breastfeeding

  • you feel as if you have the flu and your breasts are sore

  • the baby blues (crying and feeling unable to cope) last for more than a week

  • your nipples are extremely sore or damaged
