Exhaustion and Adaptation - One Causal Theory

Researcher Hans Selye, in a 1946 medical journal article entitled: The General Adaptation Syndrome and the Diseases of Adaptation, introduced the concept of humans and animals having internal mechanisms that enabled them to generally adapt to stress - no matter what type of stressor (whether it be physical, chemical, biologic, traumatic or psychological).

The following teeter-totter diagrams, called 'Exhaustion' and 'Adaptation', demonstrate the concept of maintaining balance in order to deal with external stressors:

Exhaustion
An overload of any individual stressor or combination of stressors, for example, a lack of sleep or exercise, exposures to outdoor pollutants and/or indoor pollutants, an unhealthy diet, or lack of social support could “tip the scales” resulting in exhaustion and illness.

Adaptation
On the other hand, if you could reduce the load of current and past accumulated exposures or stressors, you could theoretically plant and feed SEEDS of health by maintaining adequate Sleep, Environment, Exercise, Diet and Support.
