HOOKING UP WITH HEALTH:
A CONFERENCE FOR GIRLS
April, 2011
Women’s College Hospital hosted a one-day conference for girls, designed by girls. The event addressed the most pressing health issues facing girls (Grades 7-8) today:
- healthy eating
- bullying
- self-esteem
- depression
- safe internet practices
- sexuality
The girls themselves helped to shape the event. They helped select the topics, vet the speakers and, in partnership with FoodShare, chose the menu. High school girls acted as ambassadors and facilitated smaller group discussions. All content was informed by the newest findings from the Women’s College Research Institute and by expertise from community partners.
The ultimate goal was to hook girls up to the right health sources so that myths were dispelled, barriers overcome and girls could get the tools they need to make the right choices.
